Discipline/Profession Profile

In 1982, the Biology Department of Zhejiang Normal University was founded. Cultivation of master graduate students was started from 2000 in ecology and plant science. In 2011, biology discipline master's degree-awarding authority was approved.

    There are 64 faculty members, including 15 Professors, including one member of the National Thousand Talents Program, one member of Hundred Talents Program of Chinese Academy of Sciences. Based on the Top Discipline Biology of Zhejiang Province, the Biology Master Program of Zhejiang Normal University focuses on the studies of important genes, protein functions, interactions between plant and pathogens, secondary metabolism and its regulation, and evaluation and application of gerplasm and ecology. State-of-the-art facilities, including Confocal Microscopy, HPLC, Illuminating imaging system, UV spectrophotometer, fluorometer, gel imaging system, SDS-PAGE and electrophoresis transfer system, ELISA Reader, 2-D electrophoresis apparatus, quantitative thermo cyclers, and fermentors, are available for this program.

Goals

1. Nurture students’ abilities in creativity; Cultivate students with spirit of exploration and scientific ethics; Help them to be able to flexibly apply scientific methodologies and logical thinking in their research.

2. Nurture students’ ability in systemically acquiring basic knowledge in modern agricultural biotechnology; Help them:

To be familiar with current status and future trends in their own research fields;

To master the modern techniques and skills required for their research;

To possess the ability in logical reasoning and in scientific management;

To acquire the ability in reading, writing and presenting; and

To possess the ability to teach or pursue research independently in related fields.

Period

The normal length of master's degree program of the first-level discipline is 3 years, no more than 5 years. Among the first three semesters, graduates should accomplish the study of courses, and the proposals of master's degree, etc. Graduates should write papers of master's degree and conduct oral defense. Outstanding graduate students can apply for graduation in advance.

Training Mode and Teaching Mode

1.Courses: The 1 through 3 semesters are course-study stage. Required by the BMBP training program, students should actively attend the corresponding courses and minimum of 32 credits are required for a master's degree thesis/oral defense.

2.Professional practice: The graduate students, combined with the features of this major, should actively take part in various social practices to enhance their understanding of the society and better service for the society.

3.Academic activities: To broaden the academic vision, the graduate students should participate in related academic conferences or seminars no less than 10 times.

4.Research: Before the end of the third semester, the graduate students shall have a preliminary proposal defense, submit a dissertation work plan, and start conducting their research. The proposal should include the source of the selected topic, rationales, significance, research contents, research materials and methods.

5.Dissertation defense: The graduate students must submit the final version of dissertation three months before the end of the graduation semester. The students have to finish the dissertation defense one month before the end of the graduation semester.

Research directions

Field 1: Identification, characterizations and applications of important functional genes:

Characterization of plant gene functions using modern molecular approaches aiming to lay a solid foundation for improving crop yields, qualities, and better resistance to both biotic and abiotic stresses. The main contents are:

1. Mutant screening and molecular mechanism of stress resistance;

2. Functional characterization of genes involved in growth and development;

3. Dissection of components in different signaling transduction pathways;

4. Elucidation of developmental regulation of traits related to yield and quality.

Field 2: Protein function studies and interactions between different organisms: The main goals are to reveal the roles of functional proteins in metabolism and interactions between cells and pathogens. The main contents are:

1. Understanding of the molecular basis of plant-pathogen interactions;

2. Elucidation of molecular enzymology of N and S metabolism;

3. Unraveling of functions and structures of important proteins.

Field 3: Secondary metabolism and its regulation at molecular level: Exploitation and development of industrial bacterial strains; Biosynthesis and mode of action of bioactive secondary metabolites. The main contents are:

1. Screening and application of microorganism strains producing special bioactive metabolites;

2. Extraction and separation of bioactive molecules from microorganisms.

Field 4: Germplasm of plants, animals and microorganisms and ecology

Evaluation of different gerplasm, breeding or constructing highly productive and efficient gerplasm for industry and agriculture, molecular and evolutionary mechanisms, environmental ecology. The main contents are:

1. Collection, evaluation and breeding of gerplasm;

2. Species identification, and protection of rare and endangered biology resources;

3. Ecology including applied ecology, behavior ecology and population ecology from molecular to macro level, from theoretical to applied research.

Research Ability and Level

1. Be able to read scientific literature independently, and can summarize literature for the related issues.

2. Be able to conduct inductive logic for the problems generated in the process of summarizing literature, and then have a further improvement.

3. Be able to carry on research design and thinking independently, should have a basic ability of investigating methods and problems, should be also able to propose some relatively mature views and ideas.

Degree Thesis and Degree Conferment

1. The degree thesis topic has big theoretical value and actual application prospect, correct and full argument, scientific method, novel viewpoint, original opinion, strict logicality, complete structure and appropriate content.

2. The whole degree thesis should accurately summarized thesis topics (research direction) involved the necessary basic theory, latest results and dynamic research state. The main content and main viewpoints can reflect the latest research results and innovation in this field, and reflect the actual level of postgraduates to discover problems, analyze and solve problems.

3. Graduates, who pass oral defense by all of the committee members, will be granted master's degree, provided that either he/she published one paper (as the first author, or second author provided that the first author is the tutor) in the open academic journals or all of thesis blind review scores of no less than 80.
