Science isInternational—Under the global epidemic, Valdemar, an international student from Zhejiang Normal University, uses actions to measure the friendship between China and Africa
Valdemar Rodrigues Augusto Tchipenhe Valdemar from Angola, Africa, is a 2019 biotechnology graduate of our school. As a member of the technical team of BGI assisted in the construction of the "Fire Eye" laboratory in Africa, Valdemar has built a new crown pneumonia virus detection laboratory in many African countries and trained local laboratory personnel. The "Fire Eye" laboratory in Gabon became the largest laboratory in the country. The labs can test up to 20,000 COVID-19 samples per day, significantly increasing local detection and diagnostic capacity.
Studying abroad, Start from Zhejiang Normal University
Valdemar's father is a doctor, and his experience in the clinic since childhood gave him a deep understanding of the importance of medical technology. He said that the first time he saw his father cry, it was because of equipment limitations that he could not save a three-year-old boy who drank gasoline by mistake. It was this incident that made him clearly realize that in addition to being kind, African people urgently need to be better improved in technology before they can provide substantial support for improving medical services. This also planted the seeds of his dream of studying abroad in his heart.
In 2015, as the first student in Angola to receive the Chinese government scholarship in the direction of biotechnology, from Angola to China, it took a 15-hour flight and spanned 12,000 kilometers. Valdemar came to China with a dream, came to Zhejiang Normal University, and started here. the way to study. Although before that, he had never left Angola. However, the four years of living in Zhejiang Normal University made him take China and Zhejiang Normal University as his home. Here, he studied biotechnology hard, and the school library and laboratory were his favorite places; here, he actively participated in school activities and made friends from all over the world.
During his senior year, Valdemar became an intern of BGI. During the laboratory training, most of the trainees only speak Chinese, and he practiced speaking Chinese hard. After the rigorous training, he was officially hired as an employee of BGI and obtained the title of Field Application Scientist in an overseas laboratory.
Studying and working in China changed Qin Peng. Because he often communicated with his Chinese colleagues in Chinesefluently.A local technician in Gabon once asked him if he was born and raised in China.
Fighting side by side, the young take responsibility
Every day during the construction of the "Huoyan" laboratory in Africa, Valdemar and his colleagues fought side by side to improve the local new crown virus detection capabilities. For Valdemar, it is of great significance to come from Africa and bring the biotechnology he learned in China back to Africa.
Going between the lab and the hotel, installing the equipment, setting up the lab, training the local technicians, and dealing with all the problems that might arise along the way, and he enjoyed it although it is the hard. For him, it meaned a lot to help people in Africa fight the coronavirus. With a dedicated and prudent working attitude, he and his Chinese colleagues had extended their stay in Africa time and time again to ensure that local technicians can precisely operate the machines and handle the entire process.
Valdemar is very grateful to China for providing him with learning opportunities, and also cherishes the friendship with Chinese friends. He said: "Africa urgently needs better medical institutions. As an African, I feel that I have a heavy responsibility. When I return to Africa in the future, I will use The biotechnology learned from China serves the people in my hometown." From him, we can see the friendship between the Chinese and African people, and the sense of responsibility that the world's young people use to take responsibility.
The future can be expected
From an emerging country in Africa, Valdemar's goal is to return to his country and contribute to the development of the country. In order to achieve this goal, he currently chooses to stay in China to continue his studies and work until he can really make a difference.
On September 17, 2020, the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Angola awarded the young Qin Peng with a national honorary certificate for his dedication in establishing a molecular biology laboratory, which has contributed to the prevention and fight against Covid-19.
For him, such an honor is not accidental. Behind it is his countless days and nights in the laboratory, as well as the psychological torment of insomnia, anxiety and failure again and again. However, he never gives up, because he loves this job, a dream he always remembers!
"When I first came back to Africa, I really didn't get used to it. I missed Chinese takeout, Didi..." In fact, in life, Valdemar was just a sunny boy. He loves photography, loves travel, loves food, loves fitness, and is active in the Zhejiang Normal University campus.
