Zhejiang Normal University is a comprehensive provincial key university with a focus on teacher education. Its predecessor was Hangzhou Normal College, which was established with the approval of the Ministry of Education on April 16, 1956. In 2015, the university was selected as one of the first key universities for construction in Zhejiang Province, and in 2020, it was rated as a National Civilized Campus in the second round of evaluations. The university has four campuses: Jinhua campus (the main campus), Hangzhou Xiaoshan campus, Hangzhou West Lake campus, and Lanxi campus, with 25 colleges. It currently has nearly 29,000 full-time undergraduate (and associate degree) students and 9,900 graduate students (of which 1,264 are non-full-time graduate students).
Zhejiang Normal University has won numerous honors, including Advanced Unit in International Student Management, National Advanced Collective in Education for International Students in China, and Excellent Organization Award in various competitions at all levels. In 2023, the university passed the Ministry of Education's quality certification for international students in China with a high score of B+. According to the 2024-2025 U.S. News Global University Rankings, Zhejiang Normal University ranks 451st globally and 55th nationally. Currently, over 1,500 international students from 101 countries are studying at the university.
The College of Psychology at Zhejiang Normal University was established in 2022 as a research-oriented college, evolving from the Department of Psychology founded in 2000. It has a national-level first-class undergraduate program in applied psychology, a doctoral program in psychology, the first interdisciplinary doctoral program in teacher education neuroscience in China, and a postdoctoral research station in psychology. The college has developed a comprehensive talent training system that covers undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels, with over 300 undergraduate students and more than 500 graduate students. There are over 50 faculty and staff, including 12 professors and 11 associate professors, with 95% of the full-time faculty holding doctoral degrees. The college also has several renowned talents, including members of the Ministry of Education's Advisory Committee on Psychology Education, provincial talent programs, and other prestigious recognitions.
The college has a strong focus on discipline development and aims to build a first-class psychology department. It was the first in Zhejiang Province to establish a master's program (2005) and doctoral program (2018) in psychology, and it is a provincial key discipline and Zhejiang's first-class discipline (A-level). It is also the only psychology department funded by the key construction project of Zhejiang Province’s key universities. In the Ministry of Education's fourth round of discipline evaluations, psychology received a B- rating. In 2019, it was approved as a national first-class program. In the latest China University and Discipline Professional Evaluation Report, it ranked 7th in applied psychology nationwide (2022-2023).
The college places great emphasis on interdisciplinary integration and is committed to building research platforms and laboratories. It boasts important platforms such as the Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Children's and Adolescents' Mental Health and Crisis Intervention and the Zhejiang Provincial Demonstration Center for Psychology Experimental Teaching, and shares the Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Intelligent Educational Technology and Applications with the fields of education and computer science. It also co-constructs the Tian Jiabing Moral Education Research Center and has established China's first Moral Education Neuroscience Laboratory. The psychology laboratories cover an area of over 1,000 square meters and are equipped with advanced instruments and devices, including near-infrared brain function imaging machines, 128-channel EEGs, biological signal processing systems, and eye trackers. The university also has research institutions such as the Institute of Psychology and Brain Science, Parent Education Research Center, Applied Social Psychology Research Center, and the Social Cognitive Neuroscience Institute, and collaborates with the Jinhua Women’s Federation to build the Zhejiang Central Family Education Research Center.
To further enhance the college's internationalization, it plans to offer an English-taught undergraduate program in applied psychology. The college invites global students to join the 2024 International Psychology Summer Academic and Cultural Experience Camp at Zhejiang Normal University, to deepen understanding, improve academic levels, and offer opportunities for face-to-face interactions with renowned psychology experts, lab visits, Chinese enterprise tours, cultural experiences, and exchange with Chinese friends.
