Library and Information Center

I. Overview

The Library and Information Center of Zhejiang Normal University is located on the north bank of the Shuangxi River in Jinhua, to the right of Chisong Mountain and beneath Furong Peak. It is the most open and iconic landmark building on campus. The main building was completed and put into use in October 2006, with a total floor area of 40,970 square meters. Majestic in appearance and elegant in its interior layout, the building combines a strong sense of modernity with artistic refinement. It has been recognized as one of the “50 Most Beautiful University Libraries in China” and awarded the China Construction Luban Prize. In addition to the main building, the university also has the Yifu Library and the Old Library on the main campus. These facilities house the Textbook Resource Center and the Special Collection of Older Editions, forming integral components of the main library’s overall resources.

As of September 2025, the library provides 4,600 reading seats and holds 3.81 million printed volumes and 3.11 million e-books. It has subscribed to and developed a total of 125 databases, including seven self-developed featured databases such as the “ZJNU Academic Achievements Repository.” Its special collections include 60,000 volumes of thread-bound ancient books, 100,000 contractual documents, over 100 “fish-scale” land registers, and resources such as Reproduced Rare Editions of Chinese Classics, forming a comprehensive, multidisciplinary, multi-format, and multi-carrier collection system. These resources strongly support the university’s teaching, research, and disciplinary development. The library is also a member of major library consortia, including CALIS, CADAL, CASHL, NSTL, and ZADL, and has established extensive cooperative and resource-sharing relationships with numerous information service institutions both in China and abroad, effectively extending the scope of its collections.

Leveraging its rich collections, advanced network service platforms, high-performance network environment, comprehensive service functions, and convenient access to shared domestic and international information resources, the library provides a wide range of services, including book lending, reference consultation, literature retrieval, information literacy education, interlibrary loan, document delivery, and intellectual property information services. It has thus become an important platform for learning, research, and academic exchange for faculty and students.

Since 2014, the library has promoted campus reading initiatives as a key measure to foster a reading-oriented campus culture. It has been recognized as a “Key Provincial Unit for the Protection of Ancient Books in Zhejiang Province,” a “National Reading Demonstration Base,” and a “Zhejiang Provincial Science Popularization Base.” Its branded reading promotion programs, such as Teachers & Readers and Sunday Afternoon Tea, are widely welcomed by readers.

The library also actively engages in social services and has established cooperative relationships with institutions such as the Jinhua Municipal Science and Technology Bureau, the Jinhua Municipal Administration for Market Regulation (Intellectual Property Office), and the Jinhua Intermediate People’s Court, providing intellectual property information services to support local industry, economic growth, and social development. In December 2022, it was approved as a “National Intellectual Property Information Service Center of Universities.”

Guided by the philosophy of "resource-oriented spaces, service-oriented resources, and ubiquitous services", the library will continue to place readers at the center of its development strategy. It will further advance spatial renovation, integrate and optimize resources, upgrade and transform services, and promote cultural heritage and innovation, thereby providing strong documentary and information support for the university’s teaching and research and contributing to the development of a distinctive, first-class university in China.

II. Historical Development

The predecessor of the Zhejiang Normal University Library was the library of Hangzhou Normal College, founded in August 1956 on Nanshan Road, Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. At its inception, it was overseen by Wang Zhengping, a faculty member of the History Department, as the head of the preparatory team. The Chinese Department library, located at Hangzhou Preschool Teachers College, was managed by Zhao Bingwen. In November, Professor Li Jiefei of the History Department assumed the role of library director.

In March 1957, the library relocated with the university to the new campus on Tiyuchang Road in Hangzhou.

In 1974, the institute was restored and rebuilt. Most of the original staff and collections were returned, and the library was reestablished accordingly.

In 1982, the Department of Education allocated RMB 1.1 million for the construction of a new library building.

In 1983, the new library building of Zhejiang Normal Institute was completed, with a floor area of over 6,200 square meters, making it the largest building on campus at that time. The library of the Jinhua Branch Campus of Zhejiang Normal Institute was merged and relocated into the new facility.

In 1985, following the renaming of the university, the library became the Zhejiang Normal University Library.

In 1986, Sir Run Run Shaw donated HKD 10 million to Zhejiang Normal University, with an additional RMB 2.5 million in matching funds from the Zhejiang Provincial People’s Government, all of which were used for the construction of a new library.
