Environmental Engineering (Taught in English)

I. Discipline & Program Overview

Oriented toward solving practical problems in the field of environmental engineering, this degree program is committed to serving regional environmental planning, pollution treatment and environmental assessment. Centering on research covering the detection, removal and transformation of toxic pollutants, wastewater treatment for key industries, as well as environmental natural resource monitoring and exploitation, the program has developed three research tracks: Environmental Materials Engineering, Water Pollution Control Engineering, and Environmental Monitoring and Resource Utilization.

Environmental Materials Engineering focuses on developing materials for toxic pollutant detection, removal and catalytic conversion of clean energy. Water Pollution Control Engineering concentrates on the development and engineering application of wastewater treatment technologies for key industries. Environmental Monitoring and Resource Utilization centers on environmental monitoring and the exploitation and utilization of natural resources.

II. Duration of Study

The program has a standard duration of 3 years, with a maximum study period not exceeding 5 years.

III. Research Directions

1

Environmental Materials Engineering

This track focuses on developing materials for toxic pollutant detection, removal and catalytic conversion of clean energy, with research priorities as follows: 1) Develop nanomaterials for efficient adsorption, separation and degradation of environmental pollutants, fabricate nano-microbe composite materials for in-situ remediation of environmental pollution, and build high-efficiency and sensitive environmental monitoring devices such as sensors and fluorescent probes; 2) Design and develop catalytic conversion materials for clean energy and conduct research on their engineering applications. In the past five years, faculty have presided over 11 relevant engineering application projects and 28 national and provincial research projects, published more than 100 SCI papers in journals including Applied Catalysis B: Environmental, obtained over 40 authorized patents, and won 4 Zhejiang Provincial Natural Science and Technology Awards.

2

Water Pollution Control Engineering

This track concentrates on the development and engineering application of wastewater treatment technologies for heavily polluting industries, with research priorities as follows: 1) Conduct research on engineering technologies for upgrading urban sewage treatment facilities, nitrogen and phosphorus removal, and in-situ reduction of urban sewage sludge; 2) Develop and integrate wastewater treatment and reuse technologies for heavily polluting sectors such as pharmaceutical chemical industry, printing and dyeing, papermaking and electroplating. Over the past five years, faculty have undertaken 51 relevant engineering application projects and 49 national and provincial research projects, published more than 110 SCI papers in journals including Environmental Science & Technology and Water Research, obtained over 30 authorized patents, and won 1 Second Prize of the Ministry of Education Natural Science Award and 2 Zhejiang Provincial Natural Science and Technology Awards.

3

Environmental Monitoring and

 Resource Utilization

This track centers on environmental monitoring and the exploitation and utilization of natural resources, with research priorities as follows: 1) Research LiDAR remote sensing technology and its application in environmental monitoring, and develop technologies and products for continuous monitoring of atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM2.5), online analysis of chemical compositions of atmospheric fine particulate matter, and haze early warning and forecasting; 2) Carry out research on functional zoning planning of ecological environment, consulting services for comprehensive environmental management policies, and investigation and assessment of ecological and environmental security. In the past five years, faculty have presided over 89 relevant engineering application projects and 41 national and provincial research projects including National Key R&D Programs, published more than 80 SCI papers in journals including Bioresource Technology, obtained over 30 authorized patents, and won 1 Zhejiang Provincial Natural Science and Technology Award.
