Master's Programs
I. Discipline & Program Overview
Country and Region Studies is an emerging interdisciplinary, comprehensive and practice-oriented discipline focusing on regional-specific issues. Rooted in the tradition of statecraft, it possesses profound strategic value. The Catalogue of Disciplines and Majors for Postgraduate Education (2022 Edition) issued by the state has designated Country and Region Studies as a first-level discipline, which confers degrees in Economics, Law, Literature and History.Our university’s Country and Region Studies program was approved as one of China’s first master’s degree authorization points for this interdisciplinary discipline in 2024. It comprises four secondary research tracks: Theory and Methodology of Country and Region Studies, Comprehensive African Country and Region Studies, Thematic African Country and Region Studies, and Exchange, Mutual Learning and Cooperation between Chinese and African Civilizations.
The discipline boasts nearly 60 full-time faculty members, including 6 national-level distinguished talents, 2 members of the Ministry of Education Steering Committee on Teaching in Higher Education, 6 provincial-level outstanding talents, and 12 African scholars. The faculty team has won numerous collective honors, such as one of China’s first batches of Huang Danian-style University Teaching Teams, National Model Worker Team, Special Contribution Award for Overseas Chinese, and Provincial Cultural Innovation Team. Around 90% of the teachers have conducted field research in Africa for over three months, covering 46 African countries.
Over the past five years, faculty of this discipline have undertaken 60 major and key national research projects, plus more than 150 provincial and ministerial-level research programs. Relevant teaching achievements include one Second-Class National Teaching Achievement Award and four First-Class Provincial Teaching Achievement Awards. Researchers have published over 260 high-quality papers in core domestic and international academic journals, among which 30 papers have been fully reprinted by authoritative journals. The team has published over 150 volumes under the ten-series African Research Library, including African Cultures and Contemporary Development, as well as more than 50 Chinese-foreign translated works such as the bilingual (Chinese-English/French) series China’s Reform, Opening-up and Development Practice and Classical African Humanities Translation Series. Two monographs, Research on China-Africa Cooperation Relations in the New Era and Studies on Racial and Ethnic Relations in South Africa, were awarded the Second and Third Prizes of the Ministry of Education’s University Humanities and Social Sciences Outstanding Research Achievements. The discipline also received 1 Second Prize, 2 Third Prizes and 2 Young Scholar Awards of Zhejiang Provincial Philosophy and Social Sciences Outstanding Achievements. The journal African Studies founded by our faculty has been listed as a CSSCI Source Serial Publication and a Core Serial Publication in the AMI Comprehensive Evaluation System for Chinese Humanities and Social Sciences Serial Publications.Our researchers actively provide policy suggestions for China-Africa cooperation and Zhejiang-Africa economic and trade development. A total of 233 consultation reports have been adopted and instructed by governments at all levels, among which 3 received instructions from central leaders. The China-Africa Think Tank Forum, initiated in 2011, was incorporated into the framework of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in 2012 and has been held for 13 consecutive sessions in China and Africa. The China-Africa Economic and Trade Forum launched in 2018 was upgraded to a joint provincial-ministerial project in 2022. We have also hosted a series of academic exchange events including the China-Africa Science and Technology Cooperation Forum, China-Africa Education Cooperation Forum, Cross-border E-commerce Forum, and China-South Africa Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Forum, enjoying extensive international influence.
This discipline has established China’s first Africa Museum and China-Africa Exchange Museum, which serve as high-quality venues for academic research and ideological and political education.

The program has a standard duration of 3 years, with a maximum study period not exceeding 5 years.
