International Spread of Chinese Language (Taught in Chinese)

I. Discipline & Program Overview

International Spread of Chinese Language is an off-catalogue secondary discipline independently established by Zhejiang Normal University in 2012. The program covers three research directions: Second Language Acquisition, Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, and International Communication of Chinese Culture.

It has a team of 6 supervisors, including 3 professors, all holding doctoral degrees. In recent years, remarkable academic achievements have been made by the discipline. Faculty have undertaken 5 projects funded by the National Social Science Fund of China (NSSFC), among which 1 is a Major Project, plus 6 provincial and ministerial-level research projects. More than 10 monographs have been published, and 19 papers have been issued in authoritative and top-tier academic journals.

The program has a standard duration of 3 years, with a maximum study period not exceeding 5 years.

1Second Language AcquisitionIt investigates the interlanguage systems of Chinese learners, the acquisition process and sequence of Chinese linguistic items, variations in learners’ linguistic systems, cultural adaptation and individual differences among learners.
2Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other LanguagesIt studies the phonetic, lexical, grammatical and character systems of Chinese for foreign learners, the history of Chinese language communication, as well as theories and methodologies for teaching Chinese as a second language.
3International Communication of Chinese CultureIt researches Chinese culture, Chinese literature, Chinese folk customs and their overseas dissemination, alongside international cultural relations.
