I. Discipline & Program Overview
Founded in 1956, the mathematics discipline launched its postgraduate education in 1982. The field of Pure Mathematics began recruiting master’s students in affiliation with the former Hangzhou University in 1982, obtained independent authorization to confer master’s degrees in 1995, won the authorization for the First-Class Discipline Master’s Program in Mathematics in 2006, and was accredited with the First-Class Discipline Doctoral Program in Mathematics in 2013. The discipline hosts a Doctoral Program in First-Class Discipline of Mathematics, a Professional Doctoral Program in Education (Mathematics), a Master’s Program in First-Class Discipline of Mathematics, alongside two professional master’s programs: Electronic Information (Big Data Technology and Engineering) and Master of Education (Mathematics). A Postdoctoral Mobile Research Station for Mathematics was approved and established in 2019.
Supported by this mathematics discipline, a key priority discipline of Zhejiang Province, Pure Mathematics was designated a Provincial Key Discipline starting in 1999 (4th and 5th batches). On this foundation, Mathematics became a Provincial Key First-Class Discipline and Graph and Network Optimization a Provincial Featured Key Discipline in the 6th batch in 2012. In 2015, Mathematics was listed as a Key Cultivation Discipline under the construction initiative for Zhejiang’s Provincial Key Universities. It was named a Class A Provincial First-Class Discipline under the 13th Five-Year Plan in 2016, selected into Zhejiang’s first cohort of Provincial Advantageous and Distinctive Disciplines in 2017, and shortlisted as a Provincial Peak Discipline and a Basic Discipline Project for Zhejiang High-Level University Construction under the 14th Five-Year Plan in 2024. Since the 4th round of China’s Discipline Evaluation by the Ministry of Education, Mathematics has maintained a B+ rating. Currently, it ranks within the top 1.902‰ of ESI global rankings (14th among mainland Chinese universities), and features in the top 20 domestic universities on THE, US News and other global rankings. It also lands in the top 10% nationwide in the Shanghai Ranking’s China Best Disciplines list. The discipline boasts 3 Provincial University Innovation Teams (Mathematics, Geometry and Analysis on Discrete Spaces, and Interdisciplinary Integration of Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Manufacturing). It has built one of China’s first “111 Plan” Innovation and Intelligence Introduction Bases for local universities, a Provincial International Science and Technology Cooperation Base, and a Provincial Base for Cultivating Top-Tier Talents in Basic Disciplines. Two international joint training programs for innovative talents sponsored by the China Scholarship Council have been approved.
Adhering to the principle of “selective focus”, the discipline concentrates on core strengths, refines distinctive research features and develops high-quality academic pillars. It prioritizes seven well-established research areas: Graph Theory and Combinatorics, Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems, Function Theory and Functional Analysis, Algebra and Geometry, Optimization, Control and Computation, Statistics and Data Science, and Mathematical Medicine, to drive balanced and coordinated advancement across the whole discipline.
