I. Overview
To document the school's growth and development, respond to the call for university spirit and campus cultural construction, promote the institution's brand to society, and meet evolving societal expectations for education, Zhejiang Normal University established its History Museum in 2006, coinciding with its 50th anniversary. The museum comprehensively organized and centrally displayed the university’s history, aiming to inspire all members of the ZNU community to strive for excellence and achieve new glories.
The museum officially opened on September 30, 2006, and was renovated and upgraded into a full-fledged History Museum on April 12, 2016.
Located on the fifth floor of the Information and Media Center, the Zhejiang Normal University History Museum covers approximately 1,200 square meters, with an exhibition area of about 1,080 square meters. Its outdoor viewing corridor faces the university’s southern gate, offering panoramic views of the central plaza. Inside, a viewing platform provides a clear vista of the iconic peak of Jianfeng Mountain, featured prominently in the university’s logo.
Based on historical facts and archival materials, the museum combines text, images, and physical artifacts, utilizing spatial design, graphic art, and digital technology to present a comprehensive portrayal of ZNU’s evolution, academic achievements, and distinguished alumni accomplishments. It highlights the university’s profound cultural heritage, indomitable spirit, and enduring tradition of nurturing talent for the nation. The museum is divided into eight thematic sections: Image Hall, Historical Corridor, Achievements Hall, ZNU Library, Alumni Wall, Open Education, Time-Space Corridor, and Future Vision.
The "Image Hall" showcases the university’s visual identity system and core values. The "Historical Corridor" traces the institutional development since its founding, highlighting support and recognition from national leaders and various sectors of society. The "Achievements Hall" is subdivided into three parts—faculty development, scientific research, and talent cultivation—highlighting key academic accomplishments. The "Distinguished Alumni" section features numerous photographs of renowned graduates who have made significant contributions across China. The "ZNU Library" houses over 4,300 volumes, including monographs, textbooks, and master’s theses by alumni, faculty, and staff, displayed progressively on bookshelves. The "Open Education" section illustrates the university’s global outreach, showcasing partnerships with more than 280 higher education institutions and research organizations in over 60 countries, forming a comprehensive, multi-tiered, diverse, and multifaceted international collaboration network. The "Future Vision" section calls upon the entire ZNU community to embrace the future, seize new opportunities in the new century, and advance boldly toward overarching goals through three strategic initiatives, striving for even greater achievements.
Rich in authentic historical materials and profound content, the museum displays many rare photographs and artifacts, including several donated by alumni who had preserved them for decades. Among these is a group photo of the first graduating class of Zhejiang Normal College, measuring 1.5 meters long and featuring over 400 teachers and students. Also included are a campus map of the school's early years specially created for the history museum by Professor Dai Linyan, the longest-serving professor at the university and the first deputy head of the Chinese Department.
Since its opening, the University History Museum has received extensive attention and strong support from university leadership, faculty and students, alumni, and the wider community. Over the past five years, it has hosted more than 50,000 visitors, including provincial and ministerial-level leaders as well as international guests with academic exchange and cooperative ties to the university. The museum visit has become an essential part of orientation programs for new students, serving as their first lesson upon entering the university. As an effective platform for promoting the institution and showcasing its achievements, the museum plays a vital role in fostering patriotism and school spirit among faculty and students. With the university’s rapid development, the museum is expected to grow and enrich its collections further, thereby contributing even more effectively to the overall mission of the university.
